How does a non-US citizen go about registering a business(sole proprietorship) in US?

Is it even possible?

My business is mostly catered to US citizens and they're more likely to do business that is registered in US than in a third world country.

Forget that entire conversation you just had. You don't "form" a sole proprietorship. "Sole proprietor" is just the legal term for a dude doing business and paying the taxes for it under his own name.

I don't know how it works for a non-US citizen, but you absolutely don't need to pay somebody to help you form a sole proprietorship because there's nothing to form or register.

In my country, one of the forms of businesses is sole proprietorship. So, I assumed that's the case for US too. If, that's not the case, then I'll have to register an LLC in US.

Since under a sole proprietorship you pay taxes on your business revenue in your personal income tax, I don't think you can choose that business model as a foreigner. I also don't see why you would want to do that. Having an LLC or a corporation is much better, since you are able to separate your personal assets from those of the company, you limit your liability.

I'm a foreigner too and I'm in the process of setting up a business in the US. It can be done quite easily too, there are numerous businesses that can help. I would look into forming an LLC. It doesn't have to be expensive. Look at https://www.llcuniversity.com/ for information.

Yes, it is possible. I formed an LLC in Delaware in 2019 as a non-US citizen. You need a registered agent to register your business in Delaware. There are many companies offering this as a service. You can check it on google by typing "how to start an llc in delaware" or any other state you choose.

can you share your agent's info with me?

I have used delawareinc.com, setting up an llc cost me $179 and every year I pay $50 for the agent.

thanks.

How long have you been working with them? are they reliable?

I have been working with them for more than 1 year but before I chose them I checked their reviews on trustpilot and some other sources on the web and they seem reliable to me. They have thousands of clients like me and I didn't have any problems with them. They formed my LLC in 2 days and sent all the documents to my email.

thanks for your input.

I want to form a Sole Proprietorship and not an LLC. Do they do that?

onerbal 1

I am not sure actually. You can send an email to their support to get detailed information.

quick question. Will these guys get me a US bank account too?

onerbal 1

No, they don't open a bank account for your company. If you want to open a bank account in a US bank you need to go to the bank and apply for an account yourself. As far as I know, if you are not a US citizen most of the banks in US don't allow opening a bank account without presenting yourself.

I see. Would you happen to know if I can use a Payoneer account to open a US account? I already have a personal payoneer account, do they set up bank accounts for businesses as well?

okay.

Thanks a ton.
