Tips for a bakery startup?

I’m sure there are lots of people making these kinds of posts, but I was curious to hear your thoughts on some of the specific things I was curious about.

I recently began work on launching a bakery service (in ATX) and I will be doing deliveries once a week (taking orders all throughout the week before and delivering on a set day) while also selling at farmers markets every weekend.

I have been working on figuring out the costs and also the correct prices I should set. I’m going to be doing some research at farmers markets this weekend to see what other bakeries charge for similar goods and I am also working on my website too and posting to Instagram for social media.

I am working with some local “food pages” to promote my launch next week.

What am I missing? What should I/do I need to focus on to be successful? My margins seem to be really good and I predict I could start making profits if I sell around 150+ goods. So after a few weeks I would be on track to make a profit. Any feedback or personal experiences would be much appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

Hi there,

I hope that your business will fly quick and successful!

From Marketing point of view:

  • Create a Google my Business listing and ask your customers to leave you reviews and ratings. This will help you position better in your area and reach more potential customers.
  • Try running Facebook Ads that will help you grow your brand awareness and get more orders in your local area.

If you don't have a website - consider building one. As a person who works with a lot of SME owners and helps them build their websites, e-commerce stores and mobile applications with my team I can give you few advises on this one:

Your website should be built to be SEO friendly. Your local SEO will be very important and you need to create and grow an email list of potential customers and get organic traffic and inquiries step by step.

And very important: I see that you have very optimistic expectations, but always keep your expectations low at the start. Better to be surprised with a smile and a big profit, rather than "I thought we're gonna earn more...".

I hope that I my advises are helpful.

Let me know if there's something more you need to know about digital marketing or website development.

Hey! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your tips/guidance. I definitely will make sure my website is built to be easy to use and attractive to the consumer, that’s super important! And that’s a good point, I should run some Facebook ads to get some local traction. That would be helpful and would definitely get more brand awareness in the area.

Yeah, I agree with you too, I’m not getting my hopes up about the amount of activity at the very start, but rather I just am super excited to share my product with customers and I’m very happy with the margins that I can get from each item!
